Yuejin Lantern Festival - A key visual that extracts the geometry of a lost harbour's ancient waterways and refracts it as a low-poly disco ball in the night sky

The Yuejin Lantern Festival is an annual arts festival held in Yanshui, Tainan, with over a decade of history. What began as a local lantern celebration has grown into one of Taiwan's most recognised contemporary light art festivals, inviting both local and international artists to create light-based installations rooted in the character and history of the place — establishing a form of festival distinctly its own.

A century ago, Yanshui was a thriving coastal port in southern Taiwan. As silt accumulated over the decades, the port gradually fell out of use — but the name 月津港, meaning *Moon Harbor*, has endured as a piece of living historical memory.

The concept for the 2015 key visual draws directly from that history. The hydrological map of the Yanshui area — with its winding waterways and historic port geometry — was abstracted into a low-polygon faceted form. This geometric structure was then fused with the imagery of a rotating mirror ball, familiar from ballrooms and dance halls: an object that scatters coloured light in every direction. The result is a luminous, multicoloured polyhedron suspended in a deep blue night sky — simultaneously a lantern, a mirror ball, and a glowing moon.

The visual works on three levels at once: **local geography and history** (the geometry of the hydrological map), **the festival's own identity** (light, colour, the kinetic energy of celebration), and **a verbal connection embedded in the name itself** (月, meaning moon — the harbour named for the moon, the visual shaped like one). All three layers converge in a single image.

The calligraphic logotype "月津港燈節" is a standing typeface used across all annual editions, written by a renowned Taiwanese calligrapher, and was not part of this commission.

月津港ランタンフェスティバルは、台湾・台南市塩水区で毎年開催される芸術祭で、10年以上の歴史を持つ。地域の燈節（ランタン祭り）として始まり、現在では台湾を代表するコンテンポラリー・ライトアートフェスティバルへと成長した。国内外のアーティストを招き、光のインスタレーションを軸に地域の風土と歴史を深く結びつけた、従来の燈節とは一線を画す独自の形式を確立している。

塩水は、かつて台湾南部の重要な港町として栄えた。長年の土砂堆積によって港としての機能は失われたが、「月津港」という名前は、歴史の記憶として今も残り続けている。

2015年のキービジュアルのコンセプトは、その歴史から出発した。塩水地域の歴史的な水文地図——港と水路が描く幾何学的な形状——をローポリゴン（Low-poly）の多面体構造へと抽象化し、ダンスホールでよく見かける回転ミラーボールのイメージと重ね合わせた。深い青の夜空に浮かぶ、色とりどりの多面体。それはランタンであり、ミラーボールであり、輝く月でもある。

このビジュアルは三つの層において同時に成立している。**地域の地理と歴史**（水文地図の幾何学形態）、**フェスティバル自体のイメージ**（光・色彩・祝祭のエネルギー）、そして**名前に埋め込まれた言葉の照応**（「月」津港——月と名付けられた港、月の形をしたビジュアル）。三層がひとつのイメージに収束している。

書道ロゴタイプ「月津港燈節」は毎年共通して使用される字体であり、台湾の著名な書道家によるもので、本コミッションの制作範囲には含まれない。
