This project was commissioned to create the visual identity for a festival of contemporary Taiwanese art, cinema, and music held in Scotland — designed to reach audiences with no prior exposure to Taiwanese culture while giving Taiwanese participants a presence they could be proud of. The brief demanded that both be true at once: the identity had to feel unmistakably Taiwanese and internationally legible, without conceding either quality to achieve the other.

 

That tension is resolved — and made visible — in the logotype itself. "SPOTLIGHT" is set in a clean, restrained editorial typeface: the visual language of Western cultural institutions. "TAIWAN" erupts beneath it in large-scale Chinese brushwork calligraphy: expressive, gestural, and rooted in an entirely different typographic tradition. The collision between them is not a design problem to be smoothed over — it is the concept. It enacts, in typography, the cultural encounter that the festival represents: Taiwanese creative energy arriving in Scotland and demanding to be seen. The "O" in SPOTLIGHT is rendered as a pink circle — a literal spotlight — converting the word's meaning into a visual mark and giving the system its most immediate, playful point of recognition. The multilingual notation `//台灣/台湾//` below the logotype places traditional and simplified Chinese in deliberate proximity, signalling an openness to cultural dialogue rather than a fixed cultural claim.

 

The overall visual system is built on a deep charcoal ground, black and white documentary photography, and a single pink accent — a palette that is restrained without being quiet, and that aligns with the independent, unspectacular quality of much of the Taiwanese contemporary work being presented. The festival programme encompasses a Taiwan Film Festival, Music from Formosa, Taiwan in Motion dance, a contemporary art forum, and a lecture series. A multi-panel folded programme carries the full weight of this editorial content, organised through a rigorous typographic grid that holds information density and visual legibility in balance.

本プロジェクトは、スコットランドで開催された台湾の現代アート・映画・音楽の祭典のビジュアルアイデンティティ制作として受注した案件である。台湾文化に触れたことのない観客に届けると同時に、台湾人参加者が誇りを持てる存在感を示す——そのふたつを同時に成立させることがブランディングの核心的な課題だった。

 

その緊張関係は、ロゴタイプの設計において直接的に可視化されている。「SPOTLIGHT」は節制された西洋的なエディトリアル書体で組まれ、その下に「TAIWAN」が力強い毛筆書道の大文字で展開される。この二つのタイポグラフィの衝突は解消すべき問題ではなく、むしろそれ自体がコンセプトだ。台湾のクリエイティブエネルギーがスコットランドに上陸し、見られることを要求する——その文化的な出会いをタイポグラフィが体現している。「SPOTLIGHT」の「O」はピンクの円として描かれ、言葉の意味を視覚的なシンボルへと転換する、システム全体の中で最も軽やかな記憶点となっている。ロゴタイプ下部の `//台灣/台湾//` という多言語表記は、繁体字と簡体字を意図的に並置し、固定した文化的主張ではなく対話への開放性を示している。

 

ビジュアルシステム全体は、深いチャコールグレーを基調に、白黒のドキュメンタリー写真とピンクの単色アクセントで構成されている。抑制されながらも静かではないこのパレットは、紹介される台湾現代作品の独立した気質と共鳴し、異なる文化的文脈の中でも自信を持って存在感を放つ。フェスティバルのプログラムは台湾映画祭、Music from Formosa、Taiwan in Motionダンス、現代アートフォーラム、講座シリーズにまたがる。多折りの節目冊はその膨大な編集コンテンツを担い、厳密なタイポグラフィグリッドによって情報密度と視覚的な読みやすさを両立させている。
