G20: Beijing Yanqi Lake Capital Guest House — Publication Design

Yanqi Island sits at the south-eastern foot of the Yan Shan mountains, on a lake in Beijing's Huairou district. This was AECOM's master plan for a national-level diplomatic retreat — positioned as the host site for the G20 summit, and conceived simultaneously as a venue, a guest house, and a refuge. The development comprises an international conference centre, a boutique hotel, five guest villa clusters, and a series of classical gardens.

This publication was designed to document the project in its entirety — from conceptual positioning and site planning through to architectural design and landscape strategy — and to present the full arc of development as a single, cohesive document.

Three chapters are named after classical Chinese phrases: 群賢聚 (Gathering of Worthies), 慶大同 (Grand Harmony), 桃花源 (Peach Blossom Spring), each corresponding to one of the site's three characters — civic, ceremonial, and withdrawn. The visual system is built on a restrained palette of white and grey, allowing architectural drawings and spatial renderings to carry their own weight. Typography combines vertical Chinese setting with running English text, drawing on the traditions of Chinese book design. The underlying design question was this: how do you give a document of enormous scale the feeling of something that a single person might actually read?

北京・懐柔の燕山山脈東南麓に浮かぶ雁栖島。ここはAECOMが中国のために設計した国家級の外交接待施設——G20首脳会議の受入地として位置づけられ、宴客の場、国賓館、そして桃花源という三つの性格を同時に担う複合開発で、国際会議センター、精品ホテル、貴賓別荘群、そして特色ある庭園で構成される。

この本は、そのプロジェクト全体を記録するために私がデザインした出版物です。概念定位から基地計画、建築方案、景観設計に至るまで、開発プロセスの全体を一冊の読み物として統合することを目指しました。

三つの章は古典的な言葉で名付けられています——群賢聚（賢者の集い）、慶大同（大いなる和の祝い）、桃花源（桃源郷）。それぞれが場の公共的・儀典的・隠遁的な三つの性格に対応しています。ビジュアルシステムは極めて抑制されたグレーと白を基調とし、建築図面と空間レンダリングが主役となるよう設計しました。タイポグラフィは縦組みの漢字と英文を並走させ、中国の書籍装幀の伝統を参照しながら、静かでありながら存在感を失わない紙面を目指しました。この出版物が問い続けたのは——巨大な規模の計画文書を、どうすれば一人の人間が読みたいと思うものにできるか、という問いです。
